Push the Clay: David Potter| 7mins
Director: Jane Carnegie | Producer: Jane Carnegie
Focus Years: 1984 | Country: Australia
Synopsis:
Clay spins on the wheel. Melbourne ceramic artist David Potter (1955-1997) demonstrates the creative process in making a bowl and a tall jar including wedging the clay, building the form, glazing and firing. The sea, Chinese ceramics and counsel from a Japanese potter all inspire him. He aims to link his emotions to his pots. The minimal sound track allows the viewer to concentrate on his hands as they shape the clay, and for audience/teacher dialogue. The narrator, Tiriel Mora confines himself to David's words and Potter closes with a possible prescient remark 'When there are no more challenges, I move on', for he died early. Nascent filmmaker, Jane Carnegie produced this and three other shorts in the mid 1980s under the banner of her then business Anketell Productions. Carnegie holds copyright to all bar the music sound track of this short. She has specialised in Asian art in Melbourne and her website is www.janecarnegie.com .
