Synopsis:
This is a personal documentary film, shot between 1998 and 2002, with Manohar Deolalikar, who passed away at the age of 76 on January 10, 2002. Manohar was the youngest son of the famous painter from Bombay and Indore, D. D. Deolalikar. Manohar followed and cared for his father until he died in New Delhi. In the 1970s, Manohar moved out of his father's home to live in the open streets of the Mandi House area in New Delhi, with a small steel box containing an odd set of things placed in a corner of the nursery at Bhawalpur House, which also houses the National School of Drama. Manohar lived a homeless life for about 25 years, traveling to visit his brother in Bombay or friends in Indore when he was not in New Delhi. Manohar was an extraordinary painter and singer. He never exhibited or really sold his paintings but instead gave them away cheap to friends and well-wishers. He never accumulated any worldly goods for himself. He loved the Mother Goddess Kali and lived an unmarried life. Manohar’s cityscapes were fabulous strokes of bold and delicate colors. His paintings were done as if in a hurry, depicting burning and burnt multi-storied buildings, strange fires and lights, and urban landscapes or cityscapes of cities in dynamic motion. His singing showed his simple yet profound joy in living and loving. Here we see a wonderful human being, loved by his younger artist friends and by people on the streets, and a great teacher who taught by being and living. Manohar lives forever in the memories of those he knew, and in his paintings, spread all over India from Mumbai to Delhi, to Indore and to many other places. This 40-minute film is done in tribute to Manohar by a friend and admirer, Sudheer Gupta.
