Synopsis:
In the Alvar district of Rajasthan live the Ismailiya Muslim Jogis. They are devout Muslim singers and musicians who play these folk instruments: Jogiya Sarangi, Algoza, and Bhapang; and who sing “Pandun Ke Kare,” which is the only folk Muslim version of Mahabharata anywhere in the world. The Muslim Jogis are known for their traditional patrons, the Meos of Mewat who are also Muslim, Shiva’s marriage songs, the Shiv-Byala on Shivratri, Krishna Bhakti songs, local Mewati legends, folk versions of Ramayana, a worker’s history, and sufi kalaams. Muslim Jogis have been performing for the last 700 years in this region. Umer is part of the 19th generation of his family of performers. This film is the musical and personal journey of Umer Farukh, relating accounts of his illustrious father, Mewati folk musician, Zahoor Khan, and engaging his school-going young son Yusuf. Through Umer, this film travels to many other Jogi performers in Alvar villages and captures rare and precious recordings of well-known elders of the community. Umer, like his father, is internationally renowned and an awarded performer in his community. He is also its first college graduate and looks at the social situation of his community with a positive and critical attitude. Today, his Ismaeliya Jogi community is under religious stress and various internal and external social pressures. Actions to combat these stresses and pressures will ameliorate their situation and allow Muslim Jogis to freely practice their art.
