Bűn és büntetlenség/ Crime Unpunished| 1hr : 08mins
Director: Tamas Novak, Fruzsina Skrabski | Producer: Tamas Novak, Fruzsina Skrabski
Focus Years: 2011 | Country: Hungary
Synopsis:
The film is about Béla Biszku, communist ex-minister of the interior, who was one of the arbiters and masterminds of the bloody and cruel retaliations after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. Biszku was in charge between 1957 and 1961, and he demanded more severe sentences and physical eliminations of the imprisoned revolutionaries during Central Commission sessions of the Hungarian Communist Party (MSZMP).
His expectations were followed by real deeds: disobedient judges were dismissed. Hungary was again in Soviet chains with nearly 300 freedom fighters hanged, about twenty thousand brought to "justice" and sentenced while another two hundred thousand people fled the country. The retaliation was much more ruthless than after WWII.
Béla Biszku retired in 1989 and has not given an interview to anybody until 2009. The directors managed to make him speak in 2009 but in a rather tricky way. They could ask Biszku whether he regretted his past and/or wished to tender his apologies.
