Synopsis:
In Jiu River County, the transition to a market economy has meant drastic pauperization through mass unemployment. Therefore any individual life brought under the stage lights bespeaks of a whole community's collective destiny. Cristian, Nelu, Denver, and others, in our "Jiu River Valley People," frenziedly confront implacable risks for coal to sell and survive on. Their frail mole galleries can, at any time, entomb the diggers and their too high-pitched hope. On the opposite lake's bank, where they used to dig and still drill those tiny holes, the villagers’ lives are made all the harder with the unusually frosty winter. Nelu, who also has animals to worry about besides his so-called mining, seriously considers quitting the hazard. The precarious state of the galleries he digs, imminent caving-in, and trespassing of the law, are some of the many reasons for Cristi to give up the trade, for the time being. While Denver, and the other chance-mates of his, live on their existential adventure, unrelenting.
