Synopsis:
“What is the poetry of Braddock?" That’s the question that filmmaker Tony Buba asked his friends and neighbors in Braddock, PA, a city next door to Pittsburgh. From their answers he made the short film, "Ode to a Steeltown." Asking about poetry is an interesting way of getting at questions of community. In this film, Buba gives us a glimpse into the complicated fabric of community: its history, memories, work, transformations, people, and resilience. What’s the poetry of your community? Footloose thoughts on urban ministry. "Ode to a Steeltown" was awarded a Jury's Citation at the 27th Black Maria Film Festival, and was included in the festival's nationwide tour. This short documentary continues a life-long commitment by Buba to document the fate of his hometown, Braddock. Buba questions residents of this blighted Rust Belt town, interspersing footage of their answers with contrasting images of contemporary Braddock and those from its former prosperity.
