In many parts of Orissa, Dalits suffer discrimination because there is no political will to end untouchability. In the villages of Orissa’s Puri district, temples have put up boards to keep the Dalit community from entering the sanctum sanctorum. The priests don’t shy from taking hefty fees for conducting any rituals, but do not to allow the “impurity” of their touch.
