Synopsis:
Guatemala has one of the highest rates of infant mortality and of death during childbirth in the world. Lack of education and proper health care for native Mayan women causes birth to be a dangerous part of the lives of women, especially when doctors treat them as second class citizens, with care to match. Safe and proper care is beyond the economic reach of nearly all women, and many families have a tragic tale to tell. Outside of Antigua, Guatemala, Manos Abiertas is a small organization that works to provide a safe, affordable alternative for Guatemalan women and to spread knowledge about reproductive health care.
