"Men of Words" explores how the ancient tradition of exchanging poetry on the Arabian Peninsula is still widely used as a means to discuss current political issues in Yemen. The film offers a rare insight into the men's environment in the Yemeni highlands and portrays a culture in which oral communication, persuasion, creativity, and eloquence are key terms. The film was recorded prior to the Arab Spring uprisings in 2011, which led to the resignation of former president Abdullah Saleh, and shows how poets have managed to avoid political censorship by expressing their critique of the political system through poetry.
