Synopsis:
When the Caribbean descendants of Africans think of the place of their origins they imagine an area of darkness, a lost memory, a link broken by the middle passage. The foremost researcher on Rastafari culture in the region, Jamaican anthropologist and professor Barry Chevannes, traces the trajectory of a religion that was recreated in Jamaica. Illustrating how men like Marcus Garvey sought to forge a new destiny and identity and weaving a narrative between images and practices, he examines the meaning and significance of Rastafari symbols and its importance as a new world religion that has captured the global imagination. The gestural expressionism of painter Rex Dixon provides a metaphor for the argument of this film, that out of the shards of broken of discontinuous tradition, memory and invention produce light from a once darkness.
