Synopsis:
In November 2010, a presidential election in Cote d’Ivoire led to a wave of violence between supporters of incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo and the internationally recognized winner of the poll, Alassane Ouattara. Gbagbo was eventually arrested and Ouattara was inaugurated as president on May 21, 2011. Although armed conflict and human rights abuses have subsided, Ouattara's new government faces the monumental tasks of rebuilding Côte d'Ivoire's devastated economy, delivering justice in a way that satisfies all citizens, and fostering lasting peace in a deeply divided country still awash with arms.
