Calls for Mixed Marriages Shrugged Off: : A Window on Syria| 2mins
Director: Areej Dharweesh | Producer: IWPR
Focus Years: 2009 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
Christians and Muslims live in harmony in Syria but mixed marriages remain socially and legally difficult. The country has no system of civil marriage, so those who want to breach religious barriers have to change their faith or marry abroad.
For years, civil rights advocates have been calling for a modern personal status code that would guarantee equality before the law for all citizens.
Video produced during an IWPR workshop for young Syrian journalists held in Beirut in February 2010.
