MADRE MAR / MOTHER OCEAN| 11mins
Director: Mariana Tschudi and Delia Ackerman | Producer: Brisa Deneumostier
Focus Years: 2011 | Country: Peru
Synopsis:
Mother Ocean is the title of our short documentary because the origin of Life on Planet Earth came from the Ocean. The Pacific Ocean surrounding Peru is the world’s most fertile in terms of biomass. In light of the evidence, it was hard for us to face the possibility that one day this abundance could be extinguished. Sadly, this possibility is becoming a reality. Since the increasing development of the fishing industry in Peru, irresponsible and illegal management of our marine resources have increased, and in consequence of this, also a marked decrease in the quantity of fish. Peru is not enforcing minimum catch sizes or extraction quotas, nor enforcing seasonal fishing bans. The huge fleets of Peruvian, foreign-marked and pirate vessels are carrying thousands of tons of the nations resources away. The sea today instead of being revered as the ancient Peruvians did is used as a marine landfill. Furthermore, due to a lack of ecological awareness, untreated sewage and garbage from cities all over Peru ends up being dumped into the sea.
We are betraying our deep cultural, ecological and historial connection with the sea. Where is the reverence we had for our Mother Ocean, the mother of life? Our goal is to generate awareness that our sea is not an inexhaustible resource.
