Synopsis:
The Cavo Sidero peninsula in Crete is one of the biological “hot spots” of the world, a place of archaeological importance and of great natural beauty, which has been incorporated into the NATURA 2000 scheme for the protection of biodiversity. And it is in danger of being developed by an English company who are planning one of the biggest luxury tourist enterprises in the Mediterranean, comprising five holiday “villages”, three golf courses and places for 7,000 people, at an estimated value of 1.2 billion Euro. Our documentary aims to show people what the area is like now, to explain the company’s proposals and to examine them from a variety of different angles through interviews with experts. Starting from this particular example it widens to include similar developments elsewhere and to discuss tourism as an aspect of globalization. It is also the story about how and why the director Vangelis Kalaitzis and scriptwriter Cliff Cook decided to make the film and to set off in search of the truth.
