THE SORROW OF VELLAYANI (VELLAYANIYUDE VILAAPAM)| 24mins
Director: ANILKUMAR P Y | Producer: RAJIV GANDHI CENTRE ENVIRONMENT VISION
Focus Years: 2010 | Country: India
Synopsis:
This 24-minute documentary film is about the environmental threats and other interventions due to the damage of Vellayani lake, one of the unique freshwater lakes in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. The environmental issues are taken up by Rajiv Gandhi Centre (Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram), a leading environmental NGO in Kerala.
The main objective of this film is to highlight that water is an invaluable wealth that has been bestowed upon us by Nature. If yet another world war breaks out over this water, it is beyond our imagination. Yet it is still possible that it could happen in the not-too-distant future. This is an effort to raise awareness among future generations about their obligation to protect the sources of water and other basic riches of nature such as the soil and biodiversity.
However much progress there may be in science or technology, we cannot create a lake or water body. But we can protect them. That is the premise of this film, which depicts the ecological threats and related problems faced by the beautiful Vellayani Lake. The lake being transformed in the land, the problems of the farmers and many other related factors have became a threat to the very existence of Vellayani Lake. Rajiv Gandhi Centre believes that this film reflects all these to spread awareness among the general public, government authorities etc.
