Synopsis:
Across the world more than, 2.5 billion people live without proper sanitation. This sad reality leads to millions of deaths every year from water-borne disease. In Haiti, cholera has taken hold and now claimed over 8,000 lives since the fall of 2010. But there is a solution which is taking root in Haiti and elsewhere, which is very inexpensive, simple, and requires no water: ecological sanitation. This process involves dry, composting toilets which not only prevent wide-spread disease, but in addition create a greatly needed resource: soil. In Haiti, due to deforestation, agricultural yield has seen a rapid decrease leaving folks struggling to grow food to survive. SOIL (www.oursoil.org) has led the pack in Haiti since 2006 with their dry composting toilets, and Holy Crap! is a film which shows their work and also inquires how "first world" nations might benefit from the same technology.
