Our Concern: Rights of local villagers trampled by Dawei Development| 13mins
Director: Ehna | Producer: Kwe Ka Lu Team
Focus Years: 2012 | Country: Thailand
Synopsis:
In May, 2008, The Thai-owned Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited or ITD was awarded a mega project by Burmese government to develop Dawei Special Economic Zone in Dawei.
The multi-billion dollar project, at an estimated cost of $60 billion, is the largest industrial zone in Southeast Asia. The planned industry zone is 10 times larger than Thailand’s notorious main industrial estate Map Ta Phut in Rayong.
Thai researchers claim that Dawei Special Economic Zone is part of a strategy to relocate dirty industries from Thailand to its neighbor Burma, a less-regulated environment.
The company did not inform the local people about their development project. Nor did the company or the government provide information about the possible negative impacts of the industrial zone or the highway on the local people's lives. The company did not consult the local people or seek their opinions about the project. They are excluded from the decision-making for this development project.
Due to the lack of information in regard to the developmental project provided to the local people, they are in fear of many consequences of the project, which they have never seen and never experienced before.
Local communities stand together to speak for the villagers who lost their land for road construction, and to protect their land and livelihood for future generations.
