Focus Years: 2011 | Country: Malaysia
Synopsis:
The Belum-Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC), Perak, a state located in northern Peninsular Malaysia is one of the country's richest remaining natural frontiers and a critical home for its most precious wildlife. It is recognised by the Malaysian government and internationally as a priority tiger conservation landscape and a stronghold for other key species such as the Asian Elephant, Gaur and Tapir. Unfortunately, efforts thus far have revealed that poaching is rife.
Illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade in Malaysia and throughout Southeast Asia is an increasing threat to the conservation of numerous species of fauna and flora. This threat is prominent in BTFC, where TRAFFIC Southeast Asia and WWF-Malaysia are currently working to mitigate them by supporting enforcement agencies and creating public awareness and concern.
