Director: Sonia Hedstrand | Producer: Sonia Hedstrand
Focus Years: 2011 | Country: Sweden
Synopsis:
They are mentioned in the Sei Shonagons â€Pillow book†dating from the year 1000. Ama, the Japanese diving women, are free diving up to 20 meters deep in the Pacific Ocean to pick seaweed, abalone and shells. In the little fishing village of Nishina, a strong ama-culture still exists. I have been swimming with a group of women who still lives off the sea. Oman, aged 77, is still diving with her daughter Yayoi, 57. But soon all that is left of their partly matriarchal culture is but a memory.
