JUST WEATHER| 52mins
Director: MARIANNE EYDE | Producer: MARIANNE EYDE
Focus Years: 2008 | Country: Norway
Synopsis:
The warm Gulf Stream passes close to the Lofoten Islands. Each winter this warmth attracts the spawning cod from the Barents Sea. The cod in turn through history has attracted thousands of fishermen. The Gulf Stream also creates the ideal conditions for drying the cod into stockfish.
Henningsvær has been the symbol of the winter fishing in the Lofoten Islands, but is now a society in transition. It may end up turning into just a backdrop for tourism. Fishermen, businessmen and artisans tell us about Henningsvær in Lofoten: a living society in an extreme climate.
To the ruling classes throughout Norway’s history, and to the powerful trading guilds of the Hanseatic League, stockfish has represented wealth and power. To the local and visiting fishermen it has represented hard work and endurance. Just Weather is dedicated to the people living and working along the coast.
