'From The Soil' is a thought-provoking documentary/dance film that tells the stories of farming families from the South West of England. Producer Kate Saunders interviews these small communities exploring their lives, their experiences and the changing face of farming. The film interweaves the documentary with evocative contemporary dance choreographed by Jo Parkes.
Born and brought up on a farm, Kate has witnessed firsthand the demise of small-scale family farms and their disappearance from the landscape. The film was made in an attempt to raise awareness in a wider community that this loss has significant implications; the shrinking opportunities of sourcing locally produced food, the bureaucracy for farmers, and who, ultimately, will be the custodian of the land when the farms have gone. The film captures the current climate with lyricism and accuracy.
The project was conceived and produced by Kate Saunders with Somerset Film @The Engine Room (a community media organisation in SW UK).
