1st Afghan Ski Challenge| 16mins
Director: Hans-Urs Bachmann | Producer: Alec Wohlgroth
Focus Years: 2011 | Country: Switzerland
Synopsis:
On the initiative of two Swiss journalists, both of them passionate mountaineers and skiers, an experiment was launched in the spring of 2011: to organize the first ski race in Afghanistan.
Bamiyan (200 kms from Kabul) lies on an elevated plain surrounded by mountain peaks in an altitude of 5000 meters. In the past 10 years, these mountains along with the presence of armed forces, protected the population from the war with the Taliban.
The ski race project did not run without difficulties and many times it seemed to fail. For this, it is important to understand that the country has gone through extremely hard times of war and terror in the past 30 years.
However, against all odds, 12 highly motivated young men who only learned to ski 2 weeks before the race, stood ready at the starting line. And amazingly, all 12 safely reached the finishing line!
