Director: William Mann | Producer: William Mann
Focus Years: 2012 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
Kevin Frediani, Curator of Plants and Gardens at Paignton Zoo and Environmental Park, and Joanne Bailey, Research Manager at Alterrus Systems, discuss the VertiCrop - a sustainable alternative to traditional farming methods that incorporates a vertical growing system and utilizes advanced hydroponic technologies.
Climate change, depleted natural resources, a growing global population and availability of land, are making it necessary for countries to re-evaluate their agricultural methods. As populations increase and more people move to the cities, it is more logical and also more environmentally beneficial to harvest some of the crops needed to sustain communities, locally within the urban environment. As well as significantly reducing carbon emissions and waste, whilst substantially increasing crop yield, vertical farming would allow for natural habitats to flourish, by reducing the amount of land dedicated to farming and avoid pesticide and herbicide run-off, which can destroy natural habitats in nearby seas and rivers.
Kevin Frediani says: "The aspiration of this project is to help people wherever they live and whatever their situation in the world." The versatility in terms of locality, it’s ability to generate high yields, and the ecological and environmental benefits are extremely positive when so many of the world’s people go hungry and sustainable food production becomes increasingly important.
Sustainable and environmentally friendly initiatives are the future, but will they materialize quickly enough to balance our Eco-systems?
