Synopsis:
Point Calimere is a small coastal sanctuary in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is an extremely important passageway for migratory birds flying to Sri Lanka via India. Large flocks of waterfowl, including flamingos, spend time feeding in the marshes at Point Calimere during the winter months. The sanctuary is also home to the endangered black buck, an antelope species native to India. Other mammals include jackal, spotted deer, grey mongoose and wild pigs. The sanctuary is well known for its small herds of feral ponies.
