“Saving the Tsolum” chronicles the efforts of people in the Comox Valley determined to restore a river that was poisoned by an abandoned open pit copper mine on Mount Washington. At a public meeting in 1998 of the Tsolum River Task Force it was determined that a “dead” Tsolum was not acceptable and the long road to recovery for this once vital river began. “Saving the Tsolum” was shot over a three-year period by award winning documentary film maker Edward Homer. Arriving in the valley in 2007 and living close to the river, he was shocked at the state of the Tsolum: he had never seen such a dead river. He decided to document the recovery process and the result is a program that covers a 30 year period. It’s a story of hope that celebrates the human spirit. If it wasn’t for the determination of a small group of individuals the Tsolum River would have been lost forever.
