Synopsis:
Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are marine mammals that grow to lengths of up to three meters and weigh as much as 400 kilograms. Dugongs are also known as 'sea cows' because they feed on sea grass and the roots of aquatic plants in sheltered coastal waters. Dugongs have a fluked tail that enables them to swim. They have front flippers that they use to steer as they swim slowly through the water. Dugongs have high cultural value and are a valued source of food, medicine and artifacts and thus are an important species for coastal people. Dugongs also play a significant ecological role in maintaining coastal habitats. They feed in shallow waters, and often within areas that fall under traditional ownership or community fishing grounds. This film a product of the 2011 Year of the Dugong celebrations. It showcases efforts made in the Pacific Islands region for the conservation and management of the dugong as well as provides more information on this Lady of the Sea.
