Synopsis:
The Ohrid lake - the oldest lake in Europe - is located in the southern part of the Balkan peninsula. Because of its uniqueness it is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Today, however, the varied flora and fauna from tourism, threatened by the industry, from agriculture and overfishing. For the protection of the "Blue Pearl", the international community has invested in the last 8 years, 50 million euros.
As the water knows no political boundaries, the voltages applied to the lakes Ohrid and Prespa countries of Albania, Macedonia and Greece have decided in cooperation with several other states to take action against these damaging developments. This unique ecosystem is to remain alive. Water is life. Therefore, the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs also supports work in the areas of water management: The Vranishte sewage treatment, water monitoring in hydrobiological institute Ohrid and the drinking water supply in Pogradec.

The region around Lake Ohrid lake is formed by a special tri-national ecosystem with Macedonia, Albania, Greece. During the last 8 years, Switzerland has the seco (Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs) as a member of the international community supports various activities for the protection of the lake and its surroundings.
"Our global interest in water is also localized. Therefore, Switzerland looks around Lake Ohrid. "
The protection of nature and the environment is a major issue in Switzerland and a priority of Swiss foreign policy.
