Burmese Fishing and Floating Farms | 10mins
Director: Lisette and Ryan Cheresson | Producer: Lisette and Ryan Cheresson
Focus Years: 2013 | Country: United States
Synopsis:
The Indha people of Inle Lake, Burma, are traditionally fishermen by trade. About 25 years ago, they began converting to a primarily agriculture-based economy. But they live in the middle of a lake—and there aren’t roads, sidewalks, or even islands connecting their villages. To farm, they’ve created an extensive system of floating gardens, and export their crops to major hubs like Mandalay and Yangon. With the advent of technological tools such as cell phones and Internet, their community is changing, and since the governmental change in 2010, villagers have unprecedented access to drinking water and education. Yet while exterior things may change, Myanmar culture is largely the same.
