Focus Years: 2011 | Country: Italy
Synopsis:
Summer pastures (Jailoo) are the most valuable natural resource for many people in Kyrgyzstan and have ensured the livelihood and cultural sustenance of nomadic shepherds over generations. For the Kyrgyz, Jailoo is a place endowed with people’s identity and traditions. It symbolizes the lifestyle of nomadic shepherds, whose history and culture is still vibrant in spite of more than 70 years of Soviet influence and the ever increasing impact of modernity. For many people Jailoo is an idealized place of incomparable aesthetic beauty. However, for shepherds, it is also a lonely place where great efforts are required for survival.
