The Bangui Connection| 26mins
Director: Karl Ammann | Producer: Karl Ammann
Focus Years: 2008 | Country: Kenya
Synopsis:
Everybody knows elephants are hunted for their tusks. However in Central Africa a lot of hunting goes on where the ivory is the by product and the meat is smoked and marketed and brings in more income then the tusks. In capitals like Bangui a kilo of smoked elephant meat sells for U$ 5 and an elephant yields about 500 kg of smoked muscle meat. The local villagers and hunters also make good use of the organs and intestines, the stomach fat etc. When scouting ivory market one often sees the tusks of very small juvenile elephants indicating that the poachers take whole families if the opportunities present themselves and once again the ivory is not the main reason.
The question arises would the elephant poaching continue even if a way could be found the get the ivory component of the trade under control?
