Synopsis:
The story of an Indian princess abducted by a giant anaconda snake is the starting point of this documentary dedicated to exploring the myth and the religious cult of “María Lionza”, spread throughout Venezuela and the Caribbean region.
Multiple aspects of the myth and the cult have been explored in this documentary, showing the differences in belief and cult practices among the members of this religious group.
The pilgrimage of a group of believers on their ascent to the mountain of Sorte in central Venezuela, which is the magical kingdom of María Lionza, gives us the opportunity to learn about their personal stories, motivations and visions of spiritual phenomena, humanizing and personalizing the devotion to the tropical goddess.
The hazardous journey to the top of the sacred mountain together with the insights of the pilgrims and their interpretation of the imagery related to the myth and the cult will let us approach to the understanding of María Lionza, a spiritual figure that has managed to survive for more than 500 years, characterizing the spirit of Venezuela and the Caribbean Hispanic cultures.
