Synopsis:
Sri Lanka is is in a leading position when it comes to the rates of breast feeding in the world. Culturally, the “nursing mother” receives high social recognition. It is not uncommon for mothers to breast feed their children up to the age of 5 years. Further, there exist various government sponsorship programs that promotes breast-feeding. Ironically, Sri Lanka has the highest rate of alcohol consumption in comparison to other countries of Southern and Eastern Asian region. A large number of social issues including domestic violence are prominent in the country. This is somewhat of an unlikely phenomenon for a country where high spirit consumption dates back only around 200 years. According to WHO, alcohol related traffic accidents are the ‘death factor’ in Sri Lanka. What is the psychological and biochemical inter-relationship between these two divergent factors? Does long term breast-feeding lead to alcoholism?
