Mokudo Taisen Deshimaru - The Bodhidharma of Modern Times| 30mins
Director: Philipp Funk | Producer: EWP AG
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: Switzerland
Synopsis:
Shortly before his death, the Japanese Zen master Kodo Sawaki ordains Taisen Deshimaru as a monk, advising him to plant the living practice of Zen into fresh soil, as it had become too institutionalized in Japan. Soon afterwards Taisen Deshimaru is invited to Europe, where he stays fifteen years teaching the authentic practice of shikantaza (just sitting) until his death in 1982. This film is comprised of audiovisual material from the archives of the International Zen Association and tells the story of a determined Zen master who gave up his life in society, followed his master's wish and went to Europe to plant the seed of Zen into fresh soil - just as Bodhidharma did when he brought Zen around 500 A.D. from India to China.
