Director: David Cherniack | Producer: David Cherniack
Focus Years: 1990 | Country: Canada
Synopsis:
Internationally acclaimed novelists Josef Skvorecky and Zdena Salivarova went into exile following the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. They settled in Toronto where they started 68 publishers to bring the works of dissident writers to the world. The works were often smuggled back into Czechoslovakia and circulated from hand to hand. As Vaclav Havel says in the film, "they maintained the spiritual continuity of Czech culture." After the Velvet Revolution they were able to return for the first time in 22 years. They received a hero's welcome. This film, done for the CBC "Man Alive" series, follows them on their moving journey home.
