In Romania, East of the Carpatian Mountains is Moldavia, the last of the oriental provinces in European Latinity. The core of this region was once named Bacovia, a name rooted in the Latin “Bacchus” and “Via” meaning “Bacchus’ Way”. Here, at the end of each year, the spirits of the dead people rise from their graves, mask themselves and walk about freely all day long. To exorcise them and get rid of their community’s sins, the Moldavians gathe together in delirious bacchanals.
