Synopsis:
Helia Anthus has a problem. She is different. She has two mothers, a funny name, and an obvious sensitivity and intelligence. As a consequence, she is bullied by most of the other kids in the neighborhood. At the end of a particularly hard day of abuse, her only friend loans her a book. Despondent and alone in her room, she opens her friend’s gift and finds not only solace but also an understanding of prejudice and of purpose in a seemingly hostile world. In the pages of this magical book, she enters a world where trees talk to sunflowers, roses, and even the homely cactus. And through their developing relationships, she learns that being different can also mean being special.
