Vanmala - Remembering Tai Atya| 21mins
Director: Mandakini Mathur | Producer: Roots and Wings
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: India
Synopsis:
The film is homage to the indomitable spirit of Vanmala, a leading star of the Hindi and Marathi cinema of the 1940s and 50s. Belonging to a traditional aristocratic family of Gwalior, she surmounted huge social taboos to pursue her dream. The film attempts to explore her life through the intimate relationship she had with her niece, the film-maker. At the height of her fame, when her film "Shyamchi Aai" had just received the President’s gold medal in 1953, intriguingly, she quit the film world never to return. Vanmala visits her niece in Panchgani and, while looking at some old stills of her lost film Vasant Sena, she reminisces about her past and the circumstances that moulded her life. Many years later, her niece visits her in the last week of her life, in Gwalior, where she died in May 2007 at the age of 92.
