Synopsis:
Asian-American film-makers in the U.S. have developed out of political anger and artistic motivation. This documentary explores the evolution of well-known documentarians and film-makers, their growing struggle with the Hollywood industry and their hopes for accurate representations of people of color. There is a struggle in being an Asian-American film-maker in the U.S., a struggle to deal with the Hollywood system of white male-dominated executives, financial support, distribution, audience expectationS, etc. This documentary examines the experiences of Asian-American film-makers and the politics in film-making. The reason for this is to counter the depictions of Hollywood stereotypes of Asian-Americans on the mainstream, and to transform them into more accurate displays of Asian-Americans. I wanted to focus on Asian-American film-makers for this project instead of actors, because I believe that whoever is behind the camera has control of the world she/he constructs; therefore the power of change is controlled by the film-maker’s vision.
