Synopsis:
"Chinese Restaurants: Beyond Frontiers" tells the story of the Chinese diaspora through its most recognizable and enduring icon - the family-run Chinese restaurant. Film-maker Cheuk Kwan travels to the cities of India and into the jungles of Brazilian Amazon and come face to face with Chinese communities who have transcended geographical, political, and social frontiers. A Calcutta restaurant family reminisces what it was like to grow up Hakka Chinese in India as emigration has decimated the once vibrant and prosperous community. In Manaus, a restaurant owner considers retirement after thirty years while his business-savvy U.S.-educated son navigates his own unique identity as a Chinese Brazilian. A Chinese-Indian contemplates his retirement from the family restaurant in Mumbai while his younger brother is forging ahead with the ambitious construction in Delhi of a re-incarnated name of a landmark restaurant their father established in 1947, the year India gained independence.
