Synopsis:
Experts predict that the Himalayas will be the most vulnerable to climate change. Temperature rise is expected to devastate crops, cause glaciers to melt and weather patterns to become unpredictable. At 17,000 feet, Spiti Valley is a remote area high in the Himalayas situated on the Tibetan plateau with almost no rain and snow-covered for eight months of the year. In this microcosm, the first symptoms of climate change are already playing out. Here we meet farmers who now lose 60% of their crops to erratic weather patterns. The main protagonist of the show is a young eco-entrepreneur Ishita Khanna who is helping the people of Spiti to adapt to climate change. Ishita, through her NGO Ecosphere, has been assisting people build homes using solar energy. She has also been organising the women into cooperatives to harvest an indigenous crop known as "seabuck thorn" which is then converted into juices and jams and provides women with an additional income. This documentary addresses the problem of global warming and looks at how people at a high altitude are responding to the planet’s worst crisis.
