Focus Years: 2009 | Country: India
Synopsis:
Most women from the early period of Hindi cinema were not just entertainers. They had powerful roles to play, both on- and off-screen. They were adventurous, ambitious and involved in every aspect of film-making: producing, editing, music direction. In 1926, Fatima Begum became the industry's first woman director with the release of "Bulbul-e-Paristan". But, post-independence it's been a tough act to follow, especially in the last two decades, where increasingly the stress has been on conformity.
