Synopsis:
The Sacrilege is based on the political economy of the communal riots in Gujarat in February-March 2002. It was a time when according to Labour Bureau report, 49 percent of the labour retrenched in the country since 1999 were from Gujarat alone. The scenario in the agrarian sector was grim and discontent was rising not only among the deprived sections but in the middle class as well that constituted the vote bank for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. To win over the majority, they revived their Hidutva laboratory in the state. A planned, calculated move to eliminate the other half was launched in the name of racial purity. Intolerance was played upto ultimate levels. Steps were taken to destroy the cultural heritage too. The Darghah of famous 18th century poet Wali Shah Dakkani was razed to the ground. Mosques were destroyed and turned into makeshift Hindu temples. The vertical split that followed was part of a strategy to mobilize the support of the unemployed masses both in urban as well as rural areas. In the murderous frenzy, Gujarat suffered a terrible tragedy. Dead will not come back. But the wounds of those living are still livid. Within twenty four hours of Godhra train incident, each and every person and property of the Muslim community was targeted and destroyed with meticulous precision. The rioters attacked even those establishments that had Muslim sleeping partners, a fact available only in government records.
In the aftermath of the genocide, society remained torn, civilization wounded but life went on. Without any state support, the injured population of both the communities were trying to rebuild their present and future, together gathering the strings lost once in the oblivion.
