Brighton: die Sinfonie der Großstadt| 10mins
Director: Tom Sands | Producer: Aimee Tasker
Focus Years: 2010 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
Director Tom Sands takes us on a journey through Brighton's varied visual and aural landscape, meeting four different characters along the way – each with something to say about the city. The film takes its inspiration primarily from Berlin: "Die Sinfonie der Grostadt" by Walter Ruttmann, as well as Vertov's "Man with a Movie Camera". Seeking to build on these films with new technology now available, the film combines three elements: a traditional city symphony, a dramatic section that introduces characters from the city, and a innovative soundtrack by Tim Cross using location sound recordings. Though the film claims to be a documentary, the director's interpretation of the people of the city was performed in front of the cameras in a studio and later combined with the footage filmed on location across the city. Actress Meghan Lewis performs as four vastly separate characters throughout the film. The film does not seek to show Brighton systematically, but instead focuses on connection between different urban areas, different communities and different individuals.
