Director: David Procter | Producer: Andrea Farrena
Focus Years: 2008 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
Bullfighting endures the stigma of animal cruelty yet also holds the grace and elegance of tradition. This paradox evokes an inner conflict rarely addressed. "Red Sands" provokes a sensory image of the Spanish San Fermin Festival - the encierro (running of the bulls) and the bull fights. This short documentary portrays in a poetic, Eisenstein-esque style, a deeply moving montage of collective imagery and emotion. It depicts the sanctity of an old Spain battling against a younger more dynamic generation. Layered with a deeply personal perspective, it illustrates the joy of living in the moment whilst being perceptive to the raw reality of the festival’s visceral inevitability. "Red Sands" is an objective and visually striking documentary, raising questions about age old tradition and its future.
