Director: Nilosree Biswas | Producer: Kala Raksha
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: India
Synopsis:
Uplifting documentary of the first year of the world’s first institution of design education for traditional artisans of Kutch, a desert area in western India. Artisans of this region traditionally created textiles for intimately known local clients. With the advent of plastic and polyester, these clients lost interest in local products, and the artisans had to seek distant markets. The situation generated a whole new scenario, in which professional designers give work to artisans turned laborers. Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya was established to provide the education to enable artisans to regain their role as creative participants. Here, faculty, students, graduates, and experts in craft respond to their experience in this new venture.
