Director: Matthiew Klinck | Producer: Louise Dallaire
Focus Years: 2002 | Country: Canada
Synopsis:
After his retirement, Jos Dallaire pondered what he would do to remain motivated and active for the rest of his life. He decided to recruit other retirees in his community in northern Quebec and start a unique charity. Using the skills they acquired during their working years, they collect and repair donated used household items, such as furniture and appliances, then sell them at great discount in their makeshift store in a church basement. Since it is a completely volunteer-based charity, all the proceeds are sent to aid a missionary (from their community) in Salvador, Brazil to build hospitals and schools and help street kids acquire valuable skills. In 15 years these unassuming elderly folk raised over $1 million and transformed a poverty-stricken community in South America, while discovering renewed passion in their own lives.
