In the school year ahead, 40 teenagers with special needs and their teachers stand before a challenge: to set up an opera play. Through this unique initiative, the special needs students from a school in Madrid are required to write, compose and develop the opera, simply handling the whole process from beginning to end. The girls from the Costume, Make-up and Hairdressing Department head towards Moncloa’s District to buy the main character’s dress, paint and costume accessories. In order to do so, they have to use public transport, consult strangers, follow directions, cross the street, and take decisions regarding the fabric. This is not a simple task. For these 40 teenagers between the age of 14 and 17, it is a real challenge that will teach them to cope with daily life situations and prepare them for the future. All of the teenagers have intellectual disabilities ranging from ASD, Down syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder to other undefined different abilities. Through the opera project, all of them get to have a specific job and task as well as having to sign a contract that commits them to the job. The jobs vary from producers in charge of fundraising, writers deciding on the script, musicians composing the melodies, the PR department looking for a theatre hall, the stage people building a backdrop with recycled milk cartons. For seven months this project will be a guide for them in learning how to cope with everyday life situations and teach them to be as independent as possible. Through this artistic and creative approach the teenagers will learn about effort, friendship, overcoming difficulties, imagination and not the least, love.
