Synopsis:
For Once In My Life is a documentary about a unique band of singers and musicians, and their journey to show the world the greatness – and killer soundtrack – within each of them. The 28 members of the Spirit of Goodwill have a wide range of mental and physical disabilities, as well as musical abilities that extend into ranges of pure genius. In a cinema vérité style, the film explores their struggles and triumphs and the healing power of music as the band members' unique talents are nurtured to challenge the world's perceptions. Mixing wildly infections enthusiasm with a driving backbeat, this astonishing film will grab you by the heart. The band and chorus just plain rocks, and the fact of their individual disabilities fades away quickly behind the band's extraordinary humor, tenacity and pure, raw talent. Long a much-loved local music group, the employee-band of South Florida Goodwill Industries gets an opportunity for big-time exposure when the mayor of Miami invites them to perform at the U.S. Mayor's Convention in front of thousands. A mood of joyous chaos erupts; nothing this band has ever accomplished has been in a straight line. There are always seismic ups and downs in the process, all documented here by unsentimental hand-held cameras. But oh, wait until you hear this band get together to play, sing and rock the blues. The music is a glorious, unrelenting masterpiece of pain and joy.
