Focus Years: 2000 | Country: Nicaragua
Synopsis:
El Chogüà is the story of a dream. It is the dream of thousands of men and women, excluded from prosperity, who search for this dream wherever they can find it. It is the dream of two young people, Luis (El ChogüÃ) and his sister Lucila. They live with their parents, poor farmers, in a small town in southern Mexico.
With the idea of seeking out a better future and helping their family, Luis and Lucila decide to immigrate clandestinely to the United States. Luis dreams of triumphing in the world of professional boxing—being a champion. It is the dream of so many poor boys, who can only find success in life through repeating the blows they have received.
Filmed over a period of 8 years in Mexico and the United States, this documentary is the story of a family divided by poverty. It is the story of a boy’s struggle to find a better life, and the possibility of supporting himself and his family through dignified work.
El Chogüà reveals the hidden reality of the undocumented, living in the cities and back roads of wealthy nations. With their hearts open, with sincerity and courage, Luis and his sister Lucila risk telling us about what so many others cannot. Theirs is the story and testimony of the millions of faceless and undocumented who live among us.
