Mina's recipes, Terezin 1944| 45mins
Director: Anne Georget | Producer: Quark Production
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: France
Synopsis:
In Theresienstadt Nazi camp, Mina and her fellow sufferers, although surviving on potato peelings, squabbled for hours over the type of raisins to be used for a strudel, or the ingredients for goose stuffing…. Because it is associated with so many rituals and events, of ordinary moments and special feast days, food has become, in desperate circumstances, a vector of resistance, a means of asserting an identity. The film tells the story of an amazing cookbook written in the darkest of times to feed the bodies and the souls. Reading between the lines of these quarrels about ingredients and know-how, an era and a whole social life is evoked. And above all the belief of these women that they could one day re-find the alchemy of their households and the lives that needed to be fed.
